Jesus comes to Bethany. Martha greets him first. She expresses her belief that Jesus could have prevented Lazarus' death. Jesus directs her away from the selfish request to his purpose in coming. He is here to reclaim everyone if they will just trust him. Martha expresses her belief in Jesus as the Messiah that is just as strong as Peter's in Matthew's Gospel. Then Mary comes and expresses the same belief. Jesus goes to the tomb and calls Lazarus. Even though Jesus weeps when he comes to the tomb the text says two or three times that Jesus is deeply moved in spirit. Once Lazarus comes forth John records the reactions that Jesus' signs are intended to produce: some believe and some go to the Pharisees to report what Jesus has done.
